Description
Howe House is a house located in Pannal, North Yorkshire, likely built around 1740, incorporating elements from the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed sandy gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof. It consists of two sections: a two-storey, two-bay block with a rear outshut on the right and a two-storey, two-bay block with quoined corners.
The entrance on the left side of the right-hand block has a glazed 20th-century door framed by massive jambs and a lintel. The right range includes two three-light flat-faced mullion windows on the ground floor, with the mullions slightly recessed, and two recessed chamfered mullion windows on the first floor. The left range features a two-light flat-faced mullion window in the first bay and three 20th-century mullion windows in the second bay on both the ground and first floors. The building has shaped kneelers and gable copings, with banded chimney stacks located on the left, center, and right of the right-hand block.
At the rear, there are reused chamfered mullion windows lighting the outshut on the left, along with 20th-century openings and a rear wing in the center and right. Inside, the living room to the right of the entrance has a spine beam inscribed with "AB 1740" on its deep chamfer, and the fireplace in the far right room features a moulded corniced shelf. The rear outshut retains stone shelves that were part of a former larder or dairy, and three roof trusses with splayed braces are visible in the upper rooms.
