Description
The smithy located to the south-east of the Engine House at Cononley Lead Mine was built around 1842, likely by Stephen Eddy for the Duke of Devonshire. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone and is currently roofless. The building is a single bay and square in plan, originally designed as two storeys but now reduced to one. The north side features a doorcase on the right with a plain stone lintel, although the stonework above is missing, and there is a bricked-up square opening to the left. A similar opening is found on the west wall. Inside, there is a blocked fireplace on the east wall with a rubble relieving arch above. The building is currently derelict and disused. Originally, two smiths from Cornwall worked here to repair pitwork, sharpen machinery, and drill steels. This smithy is part of a group of lead mine buildings at Cononley that were constructed by the Duke of Devonshire's agents between 1842 and 1847 and is included for its group value only.
