Description
The Engine House at Cononley Lead Mine is a building dating from around 1842, likely designed by Stephen Eddy for the Duke of Devonshire. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with some brick patching and currently has no roof. The building is two storeys high and rectangular in shape, featuring ashlar quoins.
On the west gable end, there are two pointed arched openings, one larger than the other, both adorned with radiating voussoirs and raised keystones. The sides of the building have blocked openings that once housed machinery. The east gable wall includes a plain doorcase with a timber lintel to the right, and above it are two square openings, one directly above the other. The north side has brick blocking where a former arched opening was located to the right, with a square opening and timber lintel at the centre and a small blocked opening above. The south wall is mostly blank, except for remnants of rubble walling that indicate the location of a former boiler house.
The interior of the engine house has no surviving machinery. This building is part of a group of lead mine structures at Cononley, which were built by the Duke of Devonshire's agent between 1842 and 1847.
