Description
The portal to the incline plane at Cononley Lead Mine was built around 1847, likely by Stephen Eddy for the Duke of Devonshire. It is constructed from coursed squared, rock-faced stone. The stone-lined walls on either side lead down to a semi-circular headed portal featuring large voussoirs and a projecting keystone. Inside, the tunnel is barrel vaulted with dressed stone near the entrance, transitioning to rubble stone about 10 yards in. This structure is part of a group of lead mine buildings that were constructed by the Duke of Devonshire's agents between 1842 and 1847.
