CONONLEY STOCKSHOTT LANE (East Side) Portal to Incline Plane at Cononley Lead Mine

GV II

Portal to incline plane, c 1847, probably by Stephen Eddy, for the Duke of Devonshire. Coursed squared, rock faced stone. Stone lined walls to either side leading down to semi-circular headed portal with large voussoirs and projecting keystone. Barrel vaulted tunnel within dressed stone near the entrance but changing to rubble stone, about 10 yards in. Part of a group of lead mine buildings which were erected by the Duke of Devonshire's agents between 1842 and 1847.
