Description
No 189A on High Street is a bank building from the early to mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The exterior is rendered and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and five bays, featuring rusticated quoins. The central entrance has a door with six fielded panels beneath a fanlight, which has Gothick glazing. This door is set in an ashlar doorcase with panelled pilasters and consoles that support an open pediment. On either side of the entrance are 19th-century canted bays with sash windows, separated by pilasters and adorned with fluted friezes, and topped with lead roofs shaped in an ogee section.
On the first floor, there is a sill band and sash windows that include keystones. The second floor features half-size six-pane sash windows with projecting ashlar sills and keystones. A modillion cornice runs along the top, and the roof is hipped with end eaves stacks. At the rear, there are extensive late 19th-century additions in the Queen Anne style, creating an L-shaped plan with hipped roofs on the rear wings. Inside, towards the rear of the original range and to the right, there is a dog-leg staircase with moulded treads, turned balusters, and a round-arched landing window that also has Gothick glazing bars.
