Description
Nos 186 and 187 on High Street in Northallerton are two shops that were originally one or two houses, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with significant later alterations. The building features a rendered pantile roof and stands three storeys tall, originally designed with four bays. The ground floor has two 20th-century shop fronts. On the first floor, there is a large three-light casement window in the first two bays, alongside a late 19th-century canted bay window in the third and fourth bays. The second floor contains sash windows with flush exposed sash boxes and projecting ashlar sills. The building is adorned with shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, and there are no surviving stacks. At the rear, two three-storey wings span the full width of the building, featuring tumbled gables. Attached to the wing behind No 186 is a long single-storey stable range, which includes a stable door set in a sandstone ashlar quoined surround with a keyed lintel. The building is included for its group value.
