Description
A group of three tombstones, located approximately fifteen metres south of the porch of the Church of St Agatha, date from the mid-18th century to around 1800. They are made of ashlar sandstone and are arranged in a row.
From left to right, the first tombstone features a wave-shaped top with an urn in bas relief within an oval plaque, commemorating George Stubbs who died in 1800. The second tombstone has a segmental-scrolled top adorned with paterae at the apex and a moulded frame that is indented at the base. It commemorates Ann Watson of Gilling, née Colling of Hartforth, who died in 1768, and includes a moulded panel on the west side. The third tombstone displays an open pediment supported by cyma reversa corbels at the top. It commemorates Lydia Colling of Hartforth, the mother of Ann Watson, who died in 1754. This stone features an angel with large wings on the west side and the inscription "Spectra finum vitae," which signifies the end of life, along with various motifs.
