Description
There are two bridges with attached river walls located approximately 30 metres south of West Lodge to Grantley Hall, likely built in the late 18th century. The bridges are made of ashlar, while the river walls consist of large blocks of squared gritstone. The north bridge spans the River Skell and features a single segmental arch, a band at road level, and a parapet that rises in the centre with chamfered coping. The south parapet wall extends to the west and south, becoming the east wall of the smaller west bridge. The west bridge crosses Hungate Dike and has a single round arch, along with a band and coped parapet similar to the north bridge. The river walls at the confluence flank the river for approximately 20 metres downstream, with some blocks displaying large mason's marks, including an inverted A. The river serves as the boundary between Sawley and Grantley parishes, with the north bridge straddling the boundary with Grantley parish.
