Description

Old Elm House is a building that was originally two cottages, now converted into one house. It is dated 1694, though parts may be older, with alterations made in the mid-18th century. The structure is built from rubble, partly roughcast, and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and five first-floor windows.

On the ground floor, there is a blocked fire window with a chamfered stone surround and a segmental-arched head. A 4-pane sash window is set in a double-chamfered stone surround, alongside a board door in a plain opening. There is also a fixed-light window with glazing bars in an ashlar architrave, and another board door in a chamfered stone surround, above which is a stone inscribed "O C A 1694." Additionally, there is a 4-pane casement window in an ashlar architrave.

The first floor features a 16-pane window in a double-chamfered stone surround for a 2-light mullion window, a 4-pane casement in a moulded stone surround, an 8-pane casement in an ashlar architrave, a 4-pane sash window, and a 2-light casement window in an ashlar architrave with a vertical metal bar. The building has seven shaped stone gutter brackets, with a kneeler and coping to the left, and stacks located at the ends and between the first and second bays.

At the rear, there is a projecting double stair-turret of semicircular plan. Inside, the central section contains two upper-cruck trusses, as noted in the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report Number 608.
