Description

The Church of St. Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Redmire, dating back to the 12th century. It is constructed of rubble, with a flat roof that is not visible. The church comprises a nave, chancel, south porch, and north vestry. The south porch, added in the 20th century, features a Welsh slate roof. The nave includes quoins and a Romanesque south doorway with one order, decorated with diaper patterns on the shafts and chevrons on the arch, along with a blank tympanum. There are three lancet windows and a blocked gallery window, as well as a gargoyle and a parapet. A simple bellcote is situated on the west gable.

The chancel has a blocked priest's door, a mass dial, two lancet windows, a corbel, a gargoyle, and a parapet. The east window is flat-headed and contains two trefoiled lights. Attached to the east wall is a tombstone for Hannah Hanson, who died in 1812 at the age of 105. The vestry has a stone slate roof.

Inside, there is a fragment of a Romanesque scroll frieze located high in the northwest corner, and the church features a 15th-century flat roof supported by chamfered beams. The Romanesque octagonal font rests on a round base. A memorial tablet on the north wall commemorates Thomas Other Esq. of Elm House, who died in 1834, and his wife Jane, the eldest daughter of Edward Lister Esq. of Coverham Abbey, who died in 1829. The church also displays a royal coat of arms dated 1720.
