Description

Grassfield Cottage is an early 19th-century house situated on Ramsgill Road in Bewerley. The house is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a graduated stone slate roof. It is built in a Gothick style, comprising a two-story, three-bay main range with a two-story, two-bay projecting service wing to the left. The main range has a central six-panel door with a traceried fanlight set within a pointed-arched stone surround. Similar stone surrounds frame all the windows, which contain 16-pane sashes. The roof features shaped kneelers, gable copings, and end stacks. The cross wing mirrors the main range in its fenestration.

Inside the main range, original six-panel doors, window shutters, and panelling to rebates remain. The staircase opposite the entrance has an original handrail and newels, with further stairs leading to a cellar. A main room on the ground floor right contains an original bolection-moulded fireplace decorated with acanthus leaves, alongside a moulded ceiling cornice. It is believed the house was once the residence of W B Boord, the agent of the Yorke estate during the early 19th century, reflecting its group value as an estate agent’s residence.
