Description
Sutcliffe House is a house built in the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the late 17th century and 18th century. It is constructed of slobbered rubble with painted stone dressings and has a stone date roof. The building is in an L-plan and has two storeys with five bays. The entrance, located to the left of centre, features a chamfered surround and a decorated lintel inscribed with "S H I 1693" (Hugh Stackhouse), which is similar to those at Stackhouse Old Hall in Giggleswick (1695) and Lumb Farm in Rathmell (1702). The entrance includes a studded six-panel door.
On the left side of the ground floor, there is a two-light chamfered window. To the right, there is a four-light double chamfered ovolo mullioned window and a three-light double chamfered mullioned window. The upper floor has five windows: two two-light windows with recessed chamfered mullions, a three-light double chamfered ovolo mullioned window, a two-light flat-faced mullioned window, and a three-light double chamfered mullioned window. The right-hand side features a fluted rainwater head in a style from the 1770s. The gable end has ridge stacks on both the right and left sides.
The rear right-hand wing contains four-light chamfered windows with cavetto mullions. Inside, there is an early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. The roof structure includes king post trusses with chamfered principals and trenched purlins, and the rear wing has curved Queen struts.
