Description
Cravendale is a former inn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century and the 19th century. The building is constructed of slobbered squared rubble with stone dressings and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high and has two bays.
The central entrance features a plain surround and a six-panel door, with the upper four panels being glazed. On the left side of the ground floor, there is a four-light window with flat-faced mullions, containing six-pane casements and fixed lights. The right-hand ground floor window has a mid-18th century moulded surround and contains 24-pane sashes. On the upper floor, there are two flat-faced mullioned casement windows: a three-light window on the left with leaded panes and a two-light window on the right. All windows have timber hoodmoulds, likely from the 19th century.
A massive projecting gable end ridge stack is located on the left side of the building. Inside, there is a 17th-century fireplace with a chamfered surround and a segmental pointed arch on the ground floor, as well as a similar fireplace on the upper floor. The roof features a king post truss with trenched purlins made from reused timbers, some of which bear carpenter's marks. This building was the home of Dr. Charles Buck, a friend of Elgar, who occasionally stayed at Cravendale.
