Description
The guide post opposite Smallways Inn is a historical marker dated 1774. It is made of sandstone ashlar and stands approximately 500 millimeters high, with a square base and stop-chamfered lower corners. Each side of the post features inscriptions: the north side displays the date "7 br 14 1774" (September 14th) along with a later benchmark; the east side is marked "Catte/rick/Road"; the south side reads "Rich/mond/Road"; and the west side indicates "Greata/bridge/Road". It is likely that this stone was relocated from its original position in the middle of the road junction to its current location on the grass verge of the old road, which has since been bypassed by a new stretch of road.
