Description

This is a memorial dedicated to Charles and Jessie Piazzi Smyth, located approximately 15 metres west of the Church of St John the Evangelist. It was erected around 1900 and is made of ashlar stone. The memorial takes the form of a pyramid that stands about two metres high and is topped with a cross.

On the east face of the memorial, there are two bronze plaques. The lower plaque features an inscription that honors Charles Piazzi Smyth, who was born on January 3, 1819, and died on February 21, 1900. He served as the Astronomer Royal for Scotland from 1845 to 1888 and is remembered for his significant contributions to science through his travels and writings. The upper plaque commemorates Jessie Piazzi Smyth, the daughter of Thomas Duncan, who passed away in 1896 at the age of 80. It describes her as a faithful and sympathetic companion to Charles during their 40 years of scientific adventures, both at home and abroad, including experiences at high altitudes on the peak of Teneriffe and at the Great Pyramid of Egypt.
