Description

Sharow Cross is a sanctuary cross located on Dishforth Road in Sharow, likely dating from the 13th century. It is made of limestone and measures approximately 80 by 60 centimetres and stands about 30 centimetres high, with the cross base set into a cavity and surviving to a height of around 40 centimetres. The base is positioned on a stone foundation that is embedded in the ground. Now owned by the National Trust, this cross is the only remaining fragment of eight crosses that once marked the boundaries of the area of sanctuary within one mile of the monastery established by St Wilfred in 672.
