Description

Hellifield Station's main passenger building was constructed around 1880 for the Midland Railway. It is made of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The station is located on an island platform, which is accessed via an underground passage from the station yard. The building has two storeys and consists of 18 bays. Each side has five entrances with moulded surrounds and fluted consoles above the lintels of the two northernmost passageways. The tall windows have deeply splayed cills and moulded panels, although all windows and most entrances are currently boarded up.

On the upper floor, there are five bays with four dormers on the east side and three on the west, both featuring bargeboards. The building has six ridge stacks. There are 20th-century plank extensions to the north and south. The structure is complemented by an extensive cast iron and glazed canopy, which has 12 bays on the east side and 11 bays on the west. The canopy is supported by elaborate columns with high pedestals, flutes, pronounced entasis, and eclectic capitals. Cast iron brackets and ornamental spandrels display the Midland Wyvern symbol, the Midland Railway logo, and intricate foliage designs.

The interior is not accessible to the public. A late 19th-century cast iron weighbridge, embossed with "MR" and "RD KITCHIN WARRINGTON," is located on the platform at the south end of the station buildings. There are also cast iron railings leading up to the platform and white ceramic tiles in the underground passage, along with wrought iron entrance gates.
