Description

This is an early 18th-century building on Bridge Street, constructed of rough ashlar. The building rises with the slope of the hill; the left section has four storeys, distinguished by a band above the ground floor window and door, both set within plain stone frames. The remainder of the building has three storeys, featuring three windows with plain stone frames, rusticated keystones, and hung sash windows with glazing bars. A late 18th or early 19th-century ground-floor bay features fluted pilasters and an ornamental frieze. A half-glazed door is set within a plain stone frame with a keystone. The roof is covered with stone slates and includes kneelers. A two-storey extension on the right-hand side has a single window in a similar frame, above a small door with a plain wood lintel. Only the extension features a stone parapet in place of a cornice. Four stone steps with an iron handrail lead to a modern door, while the door to the left section is set lower.

The interior retains numerous original features including fielded panel doors, their surrounds, some cupboard doors, surviving cornices to many rooms, and several fireplaces. A magnificent staircase rises through four floors, characterized by a turned and gadrooned baluster on each tread and lit by a long stair light window with glazing bars.

The building forms a group with Nos 1 to 15 (odd), which includes the premises formerly occupied by A & G Clark and the Oak Tree Public House, alongside The Green Bridge.
