Description

The building is a former schoolmaster's and schoolmistress's house, now a single house, dating from 1853. Constructed of ashlar with a slate roof, it presents a gable end to the street and exhibits a symmetrical design across two storeys and four bays. There are two entrances—the schoolmaster's on the left and the schoolmistress’s on the right—each fronted by a single-storey projecting porch. The master’s entrance has a Tudor arched head within a moulded surround and a moulded stepped parapet, with a plank door, while the mistress’s entrance features a glazed door. The ground floor has two three-light cavetto mullioned windows; the left window has fixed lights. A sill band runs across the upper floor, with a panel inscribed: "ERECTED AND ENDOWED AT THE SOLE EXPENCE OF / RICHARD THORNTON ESQ / OF THE CITY OF LONDON MERCHANT / ANNO DOMINI 1851; / TO COMMEMORATE THE PLACE OF HIS NATIVITY, / AND FOR THE FUTURE BENEFIT OF / THE POOR CHILDREN OF BURTON / AND THORNTON IN LONSDALE." The upper floor incorporates two outer single-light windows with cavetto jambs and splayed sills, and two similar two-light windows, all with casements. A round-headed niche with a moulded surround centrally houses a bust of Richard Thornton on an octagonal pedestal. The gable features a panel inscribed: "THORNTON'S / SCHOOL / FOUNDED AD 1853." Additionally, there are two small trefoil breathers to the roof space, a corbelled hexagonal finial to the gable, and stepped gables to the left and right, adorned with animal gargoyles on the return sides. To the left is the gable end of the boys' school, featuring a two-light lancet window with a recessed panel inscribed 'PERSEVERANCE', and a gargoyle. To the right is the gable end of the girls' school in a similar style, with a panel inscribed 'INDUSTRY'. The garden walls and gate piers are constructed of rock-faced masonry with ashlar coping. A retaining wall to the garden has four octagonal pillars, plus two pillars at the base of the steps. Four similar gate piers are located at the entrance to the master's house and the boys' school, linked by a wall fronting the road, and are arranged similarly to the mistress's house.
