Description

The Chapel of Ease was built in 1770 and underwent refenestration in the late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a graduated Westmorland slate roof. The building consists of a nave with a south porch and a chancel. The nave has four bays, expressed as three, with a gabled porch located to the left of the center. This porch has a basket arch and an inner doorway with a chamfered, square-headed surround leading to a boarded door. The first bay contains a cusped, square-headed single-light window, while to the right of the porch is a similar two-light window adjacent to a sundial without a gnomon. The gables have copings, and there is an offset bellcote at the west end, which features a cornice and gable. The chancel includes a single-light window on the south side and a cusped pointed-arched window on the east side, along with a small opening in the gable beneath ashlar copings topped with a cross. Inside, the chapel has 18th-century fielded-panel pews and fragments of early glass in the nave windows.
