Description
Crosby Court is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century and the 19th century. It is built of red brick in Flemish bond, with white brick accents, ashlar dressings, and a Welsh slate roof. The main south block, dating to the 18th century, is two storeys and five bays wide, with a bowed bay on the left corner and the central three bays projecting forward. The central entrance has a half-glazed door and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars, set within an archivolt surrounded by Doric columns, a frieze featuring paterae, and an open pediment. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars, stone sills, and flat brick arches. A first-floor band and a moulded eaves band are present. The central pediment above the three bays has an oculus with radiating glazing bars. The roof is hipped and has ridge stacks. A single-storey, one-bay extension, dating to the 19th century, is located to the right, featuring three glazed arched openings, a stone cornice, a balustraded parapet, and a hipped roof. A large, two-storey, one-bay west block was added in the 19th century, featuring a canted full-height bay window with sashes, flat brick arches, and stone sills. The right return of this wing has five bays, with a central four-panel door in a moulded stone architrave, positioned below an oval window with radiating glazing bars, flanked by tall, thin leaded windows, all topped by a console-bracketed cornice. Other windows in this block are sash windows with brick architraves that slightly project forward, flat brick arches, and stone sills. This west block also has a hipped roof with end stacks and one to the ridge. The group value of Crosby Court lies in its well-preserved architectural details and its contribution to the character of the area.
