Description
No. 145 High Street is a building that was likely constructed in the late 17th century and has undergone later alterations. Originally two cottages, it is now a shop. The exterior is rendered with a pantile roof and features two storeys with two first-floor windows. On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a canted bay window with fixed light glazing bars, a part-glazed door set in a 19th-century classical surround, a side-sliding sash window, and another part-glazed door. The first floor has side-sliding sash windows and an eaves band. There are brick stacks located at the left end and in the center of the ridge. The right return reveals a cruck struss with a saddle and a high collar that extends towards the front, exposed due to the demolition of an adjoining cottage. This cottage was likely also of cruck construction and, along with two other cottages that were demolished for road widening in 1974, was documented by the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group in Report No 277. The building is included for its group value.
