Description

The Hospital Chapel, a Church of England building, was constructed in 1788, as indicated by the date above the east window. It is situated on a medieval foundation on the south side. The chapel features a porch and vestry added in 1976 by Elder Lester Associates. The exterior is made of coursed limestone rubble with dressed quoins at the corners and has slate roofs.

The chapel consists of a nave without a chancel, and it includes a west porch under a diminutive three-stage tower. This tower has a door with six fielded panels beneath a fanlight with glazing bars, all framed in a moulded surround. There are string courses between the stages, with two circular belfry openings on the east and west sides, and one on the north and south sides. The tower is topped with a pyramidal slate roof and an iron weather-vane finial.

The three-bay nave is adorned with round-headed sash windows that have glazing bars, including a similar east window, the lower part of which is partly blocked. The eaves and verge are supported by a corbel table, and the roof is hipped at the east end.

Inside, the chapel features painted dado panelling, a medieval piscina built into the south end of the east wall, and a medieval stone altar table. There is also a brass memorial inscription around the perimeter of a rectangular grave cover located in the centre aisle. Additionally, panels of bas relief by John Bunting can be found in the 20th-century porch and vestry.
