Description
The Greatham War Memorial is located in the northeast corner of the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is a Grade II*-listed building. The memorial features a granite Celtic cross with a reversed sword carved in low relief on the front face. It is set on a tapering rectangular plinth.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 'WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM.'” This inscription includes the names of 13 individuals. On the right side of the plinth, there is a dedication for the Second World War, which reads: "1939 – 45" followed by the names of another 13 individuals and the phrase "WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM."
The memorial is situated within an octagonal gravelled area, which is bordered by a low stone kerb. Access to the memorial is provided by a set of stone steps that rise from the path to the north. These steps are flanked by dwarf walls topped with flat stone coping and ball finials.
