Description

Briar and Jasmine Cottages are two cottages located on Main Street in West Tanfield, dating from the early 18th century with some alterations from the 19th century. They are constructed of stone with a rendered finish and have a pantiled roof. The cottages are two storeys high and consist of a total of five bays. Jasmine Cottage features a lobby-entry plan and has four bays. Briar Cottage has a half-glazed door on the right and large 19th-century 12-pane side-sliding sash windows on both the ground and first floors to the left. The ground-floor openings are topped with large stone lintels. Jasmine Cottage has a boarded door in a chamfered stone surround to the left of its two right-hand bays. Most windows are 12-pane side-sliding sashes, except for a 2-pane casement on the far left. The ground-floor windows are significantly larger than those on the upper floor, which includes two central first-floor windows in chamfered surrounds. There is a brick end stack on the left and a large ridge stack.
