Description
The Crown Hotel is an 18th-century coaching inn, situated on Bridge Street and Fishergate in Boroughbridge. The site incorporates the remains of the earlier Manor House of the Tancred family; a central stone gable on the Fishergate elevation retains a four-centred fireplace and a blocked window, indicating these earlier origins. The hotel has a rendered exterior and a slate roof.
The Bridge Street facade features a wooden eaves cornice with modillions, and is arranged with two storeys and six bays. A central wooden doorcase, complete with consoles, a cornice, and a pediment, frames the main entrance. Iron boot scrapers are positioned on either side. Flanking the doorcase are single-storey canted bays, and to the right, a further two-storey canted bay. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars (some original) set within architraves. The Fishergate front has fifteen sash windows on the first floor, and six single-storey bays at ground level. A central, stone-gabled section on the Fishergate side contains 20th-century French doors, and has sash windows with glazing bars in architraves. The hotel was an important coaching inn in the later 18th century.
