Description
Black Bull House, located at 147 Church Street, dates back to 1811. It features a rendered three-storey front facing Church Street, topped with a sharply pointed gable that includes a two-light stone mullioned window. The first floor has a wide three-light sash window, while the ground floor has a modern window that replaced a 19th-century shop front. The entrance is marked by an 18th-century door with a rectangular fanlight, and the building has a pantile roof. The elevation facing Market Place is two storeys high, with an upper jettied section that has 19th-century sash windows with wooden mullions. The interior has been significantly modernised, including the installation of a new iron staircase. The house bears a plaque inscribed with "H. (over) G.E. 1704," likely indicating when it was remodelled. Black Bull House is part of a group that includes Nos 119 to 123A, the Board Inn, and Nos 126 to 157.
