Description
Nos 93 and 94 on Church Street are 18th-century buildings that stand three storeys tall and are constructed of brick with a pantile roof. They feature a wood eaves cornice and rusticated quoins. The front has four windows with flush frames, double-hung sashes, and glazing bars, all topped with stone heads. There are two well-preserved late 19th-century shop fronts that include fascias supported by consoles with lions' masks. To the left, there is a three-light window, and below, two modern glazed doors are set under rectangular fanlights. These buildings were once banking premises for Jonathan and Joseph Sanders, who established their business in 1779. The site is also mentioned by Mrs. Gaskell in her novel "Sylvia's Lovers." Nos 84 to 90 (even), the former White Horse Inn, the Black Horse Public House, and Nos 93 to 100 (consecutive), as well as Nos 105 to 112A (consecutive) and Nos 114 to 117 (consecutive), form a group.
