Description
The Old Town Hall, built in 1788, is a significant architectural structure designed by Jonathan Pickernell of Whitby and constructed at the expense of Nathaniel Cholmley. This two-storey building features ashlar stonework and an open ground floor supported by pillars. The north front is distinguished by square rusticated angle piers, two Doric columns, and attached half columns. It includes Venetian windows and quoins on the first floor, along with an oval plaque displaying the construction date below one of the windows. A pediment above features the shield of arms of Cholmley. The slate roof complements the overall design. The south front mirrors the north but lacks the plaque and has a round window in the tympanum. Each side of the building is adorned with three double-hung sash windows. A rectangular clock turret sits atop the structure, featuring gilded figures and hands on all sides, along with a cornice. At the top, an octagonal arcaded louvred domed bell-cote is topped with a gold ball and fish vane. The Old Town Hall is part of a group of listed buildings in Market Place and the Clothing Factory at Sandgate.
