Description
The Black Horse Public House, located at No 91 on Church Street, is an 18th-century building that stands three storeys tall and is constructed of painted brick. It features four windows with wood flush frames and no glazing bars. The centre of the building has a flat carriage arch. No 92, which is part of this property, has a two-window shop front from the early 20th century, adorned with elaborate foliated consoles. It includes a mainly modern glazed door with a blocked rectangular fanlight and rendered stall risers. The public house itself has a five-fielded door and two windows with frosted glass set within a rendered architrave that is supported by four pilasters, along with a plinth and a name displayed on the fascia. The yard is notable as it is the site of the kitchen midden of the Anglian monastery of St Hilda. The Black Horse Public House and surrounding buildings, including Nos 84 to 90 (even), the former White Horse Inn, Nos 93 to 100 (consecutive), Nos 105 to 112A (consecutive), and Nos 114 to 117 (consecutive), form a group of historical significance.
