Description
Castle Cliffe, located to the rear of Nos 19-23 on Kirkgate in Knaresborough, is a house dating from the mid-18th century that was restored around 1920. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys with attics and consists of three bays. The central entrance has a 20th-century board door with a rectangular overlight, framed by a Gibbs surround that includes a triple keystone and cornice. The flanking sash windows also have similar architraves with triple keystones. On the first floor, there are sash windows with projecting sills and keyed incised eared lintels. The house has stone gutter brackets and brick stacks at the ends, along with a central 20th-century dormer. Inside, there are original panelled doors on the first floor, and a thorough restoration took place in 1927. This group of buildings was originally known as Dr Steads Yard, as noted in Kelly's Directory of Yorkshire from 1851 and 1871.
