Description
The Spotted Cow Public House is a public house that dates from the 18th century, with possible earlier origins, and has undergone alterations and extensions in the 19th century. The front and left side of the building are finished in colour-washed render, while the right side features colour-washed rubble stone. A brick extension is located at the rear, and the building has a flat timber eaves cornice. The roof is covered with Roman pantiles and has brick stacks at the center and left end, one of which has been rebuilt.
The layout follows a lobby-entry plan with an added rear wing. The front elevation is two stories high and has two windows. To the left of center is a door with four panels set in a panelled pilaster and cornice doorcase. To the right of the door is a tall, narrow window that may have been enlarged from a fire-window. The remaining windows are four-pane sashes with painted stone sills and painted wedge lintels. The ground floor windows have opaque glass, with the left displaying the words "TAP ROOM" and the right "SMOKE ROOM."
A carved timber sign featuring a spotted cow in low relief is positioned under a semicircular head between the first-floor windows. The door, doorcase, and window frames are painted in a 19th-century imitation wood grain varnish. The interior and fittings from the 19th century are reported to be largely intact. Historically, the house was a beerhouse in 1807 and was licensed around 1860.
