Description

This is a group of three gravestones located approximately 18 meters to the east of the Church of St James in Baldersby St James. The gravestones date from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century and are made of stone.

The leftmost grave commemorates Sidney Leveson Lane, who died in 1910. It features a headstone shaped like a round-headed cross with a fleurée cross in relief on the east face. The central grave honors Mary Isabel, the wife of the 7th Viscount Downe and later of Sidney Leveson Lane, and has a similar round-headed cross with a fleurée cross in relief on the east face. The rightmost grave lid commemorates Henry, the 7th Viscount Downe, whose date of death is illegible, and it also has a fleurée Latin cross in relief.

The designs of the crosses on these gravestones are similar to those found on the graveyard cross and above the church door. Baldersby St James was the last of a series of church groups built by the 7th Viscount Downe between 1847 and 1857. He passed away before the church was completed, and his remains were moved from Topcliffe church when the churchyard was consecrated.
