Description
Withen’s is a house with a late 17th-century rear wing and a mid-18th-century front, altered in the 20th century. The house is constructed of squared rubble with stone dressings, and has a stone slate roof.
The front of the house is arranged over two storeys and three bays. The entrance, situated slightly left of centre, has a plain surround and a six-panel door. Below are four-light recessed mullioned windows with flat faces. Above are three matching windows: one four-light and two two-light casements and fixed lights, all with two panes. A sundial is set between the floors at a slight angle to the facade, featuring fluted Ionic pilasters and an entablature, a slate face, and an iron gnomon. The eaves have plain modillions, and there are gable end ridge stacks.
The two-cell rear wing is arranged over two storeys and two bays. A central entrance has a plain lintel and a half-glazed door, dating from circa 1970. A chamfered mullioned two-light window is on the right-hand ground floor, and a similar window is on the left-hand side, but the mullion is missing. On the upper floor, a single light chamfered window is on the left-hand side and a former two-light chamfered window is on the right-hand side, the mullion also missing. The wing also includes 20th-century casements and a projecting round gable-end stack to the left.
Inside, a stone staircase has a late 17th/early 18th-century closed string and turned balusters. A mid-18th-century fireplace with corbelled jambs is in the front room.
