Description
Numbers 1-4 form a group of houses originally built around 1845 as a larger house. Constructed of ashlar stone with a slate hipped roof, the design follows a Greek revival style and features a central staircase plan. The main block is two storeys and three bays wide, with a central porch supported by four Ionic columns and topped with an entablature. The porch contains a five-panel door, the upper panel being glazed, and a rectangular fanlight with geometrically arranged glazing. A left-hand entrance was added around 1935. The ground floor windows are tall with wedge lintels and imitation voussoirs, and have sash windows. A cill band runs along the upper floor. The upper floor also has sash windows. The central bay projects slightly, mirroring the moulded cornice. There are two ridge stacks. To the left is a recessed two-storey service wing, two bays wide, with entrances added around 1935. The windows of the service wing are smaller than those of the main block and replicate their design, with sixteen-pane sashes on the upper floor. It has a hip roof and a central ridge stack. Inside Number 4 is a dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed moulded handrail. A pair of ashlar gatepiers, which mark the entrance to Number 4, have scrolled consoles and lead to curved flanking walls punctuated by additional, less ornate piers.
