Description
The garden wall with gateway attached to the south-east corner of Old Hall dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar coping. The wall is approximately 40 metres long and 3 metres high, featuring five ramps that follow the slope of the ground down to the edge of Fosse Gill. The gateway has quoined jambs and a flat arch, with the wall extending over it as a stepped parapet. There is a square stone panel set in a projecting stone surround on the west side. This wall forms the western boundary of the large enclosed gardens that served the Old Hall and its replacement to the north-west in the 18th century. The parapet is decorated at intervals with pieces of sculpted stone, likely from the remains of the Fountains Abbey Grange located on this site.
