Description

BEWERLEY GLASSHOUSES ROAD SE 16 SE (north side)

8/5 Garden wall with gateway attached to south-east corner of Old Hall

GV II

Garden wall and gateway. C18. Coursed squared gritstone and ashlar coping. Approximately 40 metres long and 3 metres high, ramped down 5 times and following ground slope to edge of Fosse Gill. Gateway: quoined jambs, flat arch; the wall carried over as a stepped parapet. A square stone panel in projecting stone surround over west side. The wall is the western boundary of the large enclosed gardens which served the Old Hall (qv) and its replacement to the north-west in the C18. The parapet is surmounted at intervals by pieces of sculpted stone, probably from the remains of the Fountains Abbey Grange on this site.
