Description
The garden wall and gateway, located parallel and adjacent to Church Lane and 20 meters north of Barham Hall, date back to the early or mid 16th century. This structure likely served as the entrance and part of the enclosing wall of the base court of Barham Hall, which has since been demolished, with the current Hall situated on a new site. The wall measures about 80 meters in length and stands approximately 2.5 meters high on average. It is primarily constructed of narrow red bricks arranged in irregular English bond, with one section made of narrow gault bricks.
Nine meters from the eastern end, there is a blocked 16th-century pedestrian gateway made of brick with limestone dressings. The jambs of the gateway are splayed, and the head is elliptical with a hood-mould. The parapet above has been altered but features crowstepping and a blocked niche over the doorway. To the right and left of the south (inner) face of the archway, there are blocked original openings, indicating that the gateway may have been part of a porch or small gatehouse. The wall underwent significant remodeling, particularly at the right-hand end, during the 18th century and was recapped with splayed brickwork on dentilled tabling in the 19th century. A stone coat of arms that was previously built into the wall above the gateway has since been removed.
