Description

The Thorns is a house that has been converted into three dwellings. It dates from the late 17th century and has undergone later additions and alterations, including an 18th-century entrance bay on the right and a rear outshut with a catslide roof. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a pantile roof, with brick dormers and stacks. The main range has a cross wing at the rear and is two storeys high with attics, displaying four first-floor windows. There is a four-panel door on the right and three-light Yorkshire sash windows to the left. On the first floor, a central sash window with glazing bars is flanked by two three-light Yorkshire sashes under timber lintels, with a casement window on the extreme right. The gabled dormers contain 16-pane sashes. The building has shaped kneelers, gable coping, and massive external end stacks. Inside, there are massive chamfered cross beams, and the roof features purlins that are trenched into the backs of the principal rafters, though the apex is not visible.
