Description

The walling to the park south of the gatehouse at Castle Howard dates from around 1723 and was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh for Charles Howard, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. This structure runs east-west for approximately one mile and is located immediately south of the Pyramid Gate. The wall is constructed of limestone ashlar in the central section, with rubble in the outer sections. It stands approximately 4 metres high and features a plinth, buttresses, and tapering upper courses. There are square and circular interval towers of varying designs along the wall.
