Description
Cambridge Crescent, Nos 1 to 12, was built between 1867 and 1868 by George Dawson, designed by J H Hirst of Bristol. This crescent consists of three bay units that step down the hill and features three storeys, attics, dormers, and cellars. The roofs are mostly slated mansard with gabled dormers; No 4 has a large central dormer flanked by pilasters that support an entablature and pediment. The exterior is made of grit stone ashlar with red brick dressings and elaborate detailing. There is a bracketed cornice with attic windows in the parapet above. The windows are arched sash types; the second floor has two lights in recesses with cast iron balconies, while the first floor windows have enriched surrounds. The ground floor features mostly modern bank and shop fronts; No 4, which houses the National Westminster Bank, has fluted half-columns with Tower of Wind capitals, an entablature, and architraved doorways with console bracketed cornices. No 6, also a National Westminster Bank, showcases an enriched Flemish Renaissance frontage with Ionic pilasters, a bracketed cornice, arched openings with carved figures as part of the keys, and end bays with coats of arms in the frieze, along with a wrought iron balcony at the first floor level. Nos 1 to 12 form a cohesive group.
