Description

Railway Cottage, built around 1845 and later extended, was originally a station and station house commissioned by the York and North Midland Railway Company. It is constructed of dressed sandstone with sandstone ashlar detailing and a slate roof.

The north side of the building features a single-storey, two-bay central range with projecting wings. The centre range has 16-pane sashes with painted moulded sills, and a raised clock surround between the windows. The gabled wings each have a two-centred blind arch containing paired, radially-glazed sashes, set within raised, round-arched surrounds with impost detailing. A painted moulded sill band runs along the base, and the eaves overhang with brackets. There are arched ridge and gable stacks with decorative cornices.

The right front of the building has three bays. The left and centre bays are single-storey, with the centre bay gabled and projecting. A 16-pane sash is found in the left bay, while the centre bay has a round-arched, radially-glazed sash flanked by narrow recessed panels, with overhanging bracketed eaves. The right bay is gabled, with a 12-pane sash on the ground floor and a radially-glazed sash on the first floor. This bay also features overhanging eaves supported by ogee-shaped brackets, and a corniced stack piercing the roof.
