Description
Thatch Cottage is an open hall house, likely dating from the 16th century, with a restoration from the 20th century. It features a timber frame and a thatched roof, comprising three and a half bays, with a storeyed solar at the right end. The through-passage and rear aisle were removed around 1968, and there is a large 20th-century single-storey extension set back on the left, which is not of special interest. The cottage has a 20th-century rubble plinth. Architectural details include a sole plate, mid-rail, and wall plate with arched braces from the wall posts, except in the smoke bay between the first and second main bays. There is inserted close studding, an oak board door in the first bay, a three-light window on the first floor of the second bay, and a two-light window on each floor of the third bay. The roof is hipped, and there is a brick ridge stack to the right of the door. At the rear, brick infill has been added to the frame since the removal of the rear aisle.
Inside, the cottage features jowelled posts, with the right bay having arched braces to a cambered tie beam that shows mortices from former partition walls. Lambs-tongue stops are present on the chamfered cross-beams, along with stop-chamfered joists and wide first-floor boards. A smoke hood has been inserted in the smoke bay, featuring a stop-chamfered bressummer and hearth post, as well as a chamfered heck post. The roof structure consists of common rafters with clasped side purlins, and there is 16th and 17th-century panelling inserted in the left bay.
