Description

Swallows is a house, originally a pair of cottages, dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century. It was restored in the mid-to-late 20th century. The house is timber framed with rendered infill and has a plain tile roof. It presents as an open hall of two bays of roughly equal length, with storeyed end bays. The left end bay may have incorporated an undershot cross-passage. A smoke bay was likely created in the left hall bay before a stack was inserted. The house has two storeys and sits on a stone plinth. The timber framing features broadly-spaced studs with tension braces, and gable end jetties. A steeply-pitched hipped roof has gablets. There is a slender brick stack in the rear slope of the roof towards the left end and a multiple brick ridge stack to the right end of the left hall bay. The windows comprise four leaded casements: one four-light window to the left, one three-light window to the left of the stack, and one to the right end. A slightly projecting, rectangular three-light oriel window, supported on shaped brackets carved with the date 1616, is located in the right hall bay. This oriel rises above the eaves, with a moulded beam to the window head and plain bargeboards to the gable. A ribbed door is set within a 20th-century rendered porch on the left end of the right end bay. Inside, the original timber framing is exposed. A moulded right end-of-hall beam remains, along with a moulded crown-post to the central truss, and another set on an axial tie-beam in the left end bay. The ground-floor fireplace features tooled and chamfered jambs and a wooden bressumer. A small, chamfered stone fireplace is located on the first floor.
