Description
Carlton Hall is a house located on the north side of Carlton Husthwaite Village Street. It likely dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and a mid to late 19th-century extension. The original building is L-shaped, featuring a front range that is now roughcast with an artificial stone slate roof. The service range, probably from the early 18th century, is at the rear right and constructed of brick with a 20th-century interlocking tile roof. A three-storey range from the 19th century in white brick fills in the square of the plan.
The south range has two storeys and four bays. It features a central 20th-century part-glazed door with a two-pane overlight, set within a hardwood pedimented surround. The windows in the central two bays are late 18th-century sashes with thin glazing bars and crown glass, while the outer bays have four-pane sashes on the ground floor and 16-pane sashes on the first floor. The building has shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, with stacks located between the first and second bays and on the ridge of the rear right wing.
At the rear, the 19th-century range to the right of the gabled wing includes a canted bay window with pointed lights and a terrace featuring quatrefoils piercing the balustrade. The left return has a chamfered single-light loft window in the front range, and the floor and window levels of the 19th-century range differ from those at the front, creating mezzanines.
Inside, the house retains late 17th-century cornices in the rooms to the left, late 18th-century fielded panel shutters and doors, and a 19th-century staircase with Gothic tracery panels in the balustrade. The mezzanine-level sitting room features a French-style fireplace and an embossed ceiling.
