Description
St Mary's Cottage is an early 18th-century house located on the south side of Lythe Valley Road in Sandsend. It is constructed of coursed squared stone and features a pantiled roof with stone copings and shaped kneelers, along with end brick chimneys. The cottage has one storey and two wide-proportioned windows. The upper windows, which break the eaves, are three-light sliding sashes, while the lower windows consist of three lights with glazing bars and small central openings. An early 19th-century six-panel door is attached to an earlier door. The interior has been significantly remodelled in the early 19th century, featuring six-panel doors and window shutters, with the downstairs rooms re-beamed. In the inglenook of the former kitchen, the walls are half lined with Dutch delft biblical tiles, likely from the early 18th century. There is also a small one-storey set-back extension on the right and a large sloped buttress at the front.
