Description

No 12 Market Place is a shop that dates back to the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a timber-framed structure and is topped with a Westmorland slate roof. It has two storeys with attics, consisting of two bays facing the Market Place and four bays along Butter Lane. The central entrance has a glazed shop door flanked by plate-glass shop windows, and the shop front is adorned with 19th-century casing and a cornice. The first and attic floors have 4-pane sash windows set in flush frames, with the attic windows located in paired gables that feature an applied timber frame. A tall chimney stack is positioned to the right and at the rear of the left bay.

Inside, the cellar is lined with stone and brick and contains a reused timber post that supports the ground floor. There is a large fireplace with a timber mantle beam and a brick-lined oven in the center of the left bay, along with a large stone trough and stone shelves in a small room at the rear of the left bay. Parts of the original stone slab and cobble flooring are still visible. The ground and first floors retain wall posts, beams, and joists, and there is a blocked 2-light ovolo-moulded wooden mullioned window located below the eaves towards the rear of the east side. The roof structure remains intact throughout, with an extension at the rear.
