Description

The steps to the market cross, known locally as the Butter Cross, date from the 18th century or earlier and are made of millstone grit. They consist of four concentric steps arranged in a circular shape. A 20th-century cross sits atop the steps. An 1849 Ordnance Survey map indicates this location as the 'Site of the Market Cross', showing the steps as octagonal in plan.
