Description
The Limekilns at the CCC Caravan Site, dated 1856, are former limekilns located near Leyburn in Harmby. They are constructed from rubble and brick and consist of a range of three pairs of limekilns built into the hillside. Each kiln is approximately square in shape and features three hearths with small round arches made of pale brick. Each kiln opening has a semi-circular arch formed from rubble voussoirs, with the second kiln from the left being partly blocked. In the center, there is an ashlar plaque inscribed with 'M W & Co. 1856'. Cast-iron beams, some of which are broken off, project from the top of the structure. There are two small turrets at the top edge, although there were probably originally three. The construction of these limekilns is linked to the opening of the Wensleydale railway line, which runs nearby.
