Description
The Golden Lion Hotel and its front railings date from the 18th century. The hotel is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a stone slate roof. It is three storeys high, with three windows on the first floor, and follows a double-depth plan. Rusticated quoins are visible on the exterior. The main entrance is located between the first and second bays, and comprises a double-leaf door within a 19th-century classical doorcase. This doorcase features a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. Ground floor canted bays are present, with a golden lion motif above the third bay and another lion, also with a classical cornice and blocking course, on the first floor. The first floor holds sash windows set in moulded ashlar surrounds. The second floor contains four smaller sash windows, with the window between bays one and two being a later insertion. Shaped kneelers and ashlar copings are present, together with stacks at the ends of the building and between bays one and two. A low rubble wall with saddleback coping supports cast-iron railings featuring fleurs-de-lis finials in front of the hotel. The railings and wall are included due to their group value.
