Description
The Town Hall, dated 1856, is located in Leyburn's Market Place and may incorporate an earlier building. It was built for Lord Bolton and features a rendered exterior with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five by two bays. It has rusticated quoins and an ashlar plinth. Each facade has a central doorway with a cornice supported by consoles; the doorway on the west side has been converted into a window, while those on the north and east sides have cast-iron balustered railings leading to steps.
On the ground floor, there are sash windows with glazing bars, some of which have been altered into shop windows. An ashlar band runs along the ground floor. The first floor features larger sash windows with glazing bars that serve the courtroom. The building has a rendered cornice and a blind parapet, with corniced ashlar stacks located at the ends and between the first and second bays, as well as between the fourth and fifth bays. This Town Hall is a significant feature of the Market Place.
